I just came back from the matinee performance. And Oh My God.
Today was MILES better than last Wednesday. The corps were together more, everyone was in time, it was such a beauty to watch.
Maria Kochetkova was perfect as Sugar Plum. After watching her performance as Clara last Wednesday I was doubtful whether she could carry off the Sugar Plum, as she was such a youthful Clara, you could believe that she was just a kid (well she is quite young herself). Today as she walked on stage as Sugar Plum Fairy she looked the part completely.
Her dancing was breath-taking. This is the first ever time I''ve ever seen anyone dancing that made my heart race. For some reason that even I cannot explain myself, I was close to tears after she did the pdd with the prince.
Her solo was delicate and bright at the same time. The presto at the end was just perfect, with impeccable timing. She has a long way to go.
Can''t wait to next see her dance!

Went to see Nut last night, and I was greatly suprised.
I have previously seen pictures of the production before, but haven''t seen this version of the full ballet. I''ve only been to the performance at the ROH on the 8th so I suppose I suffered a bit of a "cultural shock".

Cast:
Clara - Maria Kochetkova
Drosselmeyer - Daniel Jones (Yat-Sen Chang was injured)
Sugar Plum - Erina Takahashi
Prince - Cesar Morales

I still haven''t decided if I like the set design and the costume/make up, it being so different from the classical look of ballets. However I do think it''s a bit of a nice change. Being Chinese myself, I don''t like the hair-do of the Chinese dancers. I can even say I am pretty outraged. Never in Chinese history have Chinese takeaway people (especially women) been bald with a tuft of hair sticking out at the top of the head.

However commenting just on the dancing, I do think that it was exceptional. Maria Kochetkova really stood out for me with her beautiful dancing, clear as crystal. (I''m going to book tickets to see her as Sugar Plum, hopefully there''ll still be tickets left!)Cesar Morales was very good in his role as the prince, however I think he was outshone by Fernando Bufala in the Russian.

The corps in the snow and flowers were, I feel, still a little bit uncomfortable. Quite a few of them were out of time and it looks like it could do with a bit more polishing. (Easy for me to say, however I do appreciate that it is very difficult to get synchronisation out of a whole group of people. Comparing the corps based on the performance last night to the RB, the RB was better by a mile.)

Trained at the Bolshoi, this twenty-one year old brings a pure and gorgeous technique coupled with a sparkling personality and interpretative insight, and as Clara she bursts with Christmas Joie. Later in the run she is giving her debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy and I suspect that this will be a great balletic event. Wayne Eagling has most certainly inherited a company in the greatest of shapes.
